Following their successful Zenith collaboration last year, the watch enthusiast club Collective has announced a new and very limited project with a brand that’s a bit closer to the club’s core in the greater San Francisco area. They’ve teamed up with California-based Josh Shapiro for a limited run of his Infinity Series that features handmade and engine-turned meteorite dials. Engine-turning, a slow and very detailed process of finishing intricate patterns into metals, has become the calling card for Shapiro and his brand, J.N. Shapiro. The company believes this is the first time ever that a watch has incorporated a dial made from a four-billion-year-old slice of meteorite with engine-turned finishing.
Representing the inaugural model in Collective’s new “Portfolio Series,” the P.01 will be limited to just 10 units offered only to new and existing members of the club. Buyers will have the option of steel, white gold, or rose gold, as well as a handful of other dial design options including color and nameplate customization. Each dial is said to take more than 150 hours of work and, given that Shapiro also hand finishes the case and movement along with handcrafting the hands and serial plate, the end result is reflective of hundreds of hours of work for each finished watch. Ten feels like a good number.
The case is 40mm wide and houses a manufacture movement from Germany’s Uhren Werke Dresden called the UWD 33.1. Hand-wound and ticking at 3 Hz, the 33.1 is a strong aesthetic match for the P.01’s jaw-dropping dial. Easily viewed via an expansive display caseback, the 33.1 is beautifully finished and, thanks to a relatively open design, offers an excellent view of its architecture. That said, as pretty as the movement may be, the main show is front and center with the unique effect and incredible finishing of that meteorite dial.
I was fortunate enough to spend a few hours with a sample P.01 (along with a few isolated dial components) while producing the included photography. The watch is an absolute stunner. From the flash of the blued hands to the highly complementary mix of textures provided by the meteorite and the infinity wave finishing on the sub-seconds, the P.01’s wrist presence blends the simple functional look of a classic chronometer with layers of detail, color, and razor-sharp finishing. On wrist, it’s a treat – with an easy-wearing footprint that belies the intensity of both its creation and the presentation of the dial design.
Starting at $ 21,500 in steel, this is a remarkable and enthusiast-specific collaboration that speaks directly to the nature of Collective. It’s non-casual, entirely unassuming to those outside of the loop, and a very special way to express the qualities of an enthusiast watch club.
