TAG Heuer is continuing its 160-year anniversary celebration. Last week, we went Hands-On with the 160 Years Silver Dial Limited Edition. Today, the brand has unveiled quite the follow-up to that watch with the Carrera 160 Years Montreal Limited Edition. This watch takes from the modern Carrera line in terms of case shape, movement, and overall feel, but is heavily inspired by the vintage Heuer Montreal chronograph. It is from that watch that this Limited Edition takes its bright color palette. The new Carrera 160 Years Montreal Limited Edition is offered in a no-date configuration, bears the classic Heuer wordmark and is limited to 1,000 pieces.
The Heuer Montreal was released in 1972 and represented a vast change in both design and overall presentation for the Heuer brand at the time. The oversized (read chunky) 42mm case with the bold use of red, blue, and yellow on the dial was nothing if not pure 70’s charm. That watch utilized the in-house Heuer Calibre 12 and featured a bi-compax dial layout with a date window at six o’clock. It featured both a pulsation and tachymeter scale. The original Calibre 12 Montreal had a fairly short production run (later iterations would utilize Valjoux chronograph movements) and, as a result, the model has become quite collectible.
The new Carrera 160 Years Montreal Limited Edition is not a re-edition per se. Rather, this watch takes from the DNA of both the Carrera and the Montreal to create a very unique watch. The new model does not explicitly say Montreal anywhere on the dial, but it embodies the soul of that watch through its overall appearance and use of bold colors. The yellow, red, and blue flourishes throughout the new limited edition speak to the celebration of the original Montreal model.
The watch sports the familiarly great (and slightly thinner) 39mm Carrera case, which represents a significant decrease in size from the 42mm vintage Montreal. As was previously mentioned, the vintage Montreal featured a date display at six o’clock. The limited edition has forgone the date complication altogether, giving the watch a much more balanced look. It is not often that a brand will decrease the case size of a watch when creating a modern re-interpretation, let alone remove the date window, but that is exactly what have here.
The dial is matte white, with a blue ring surrounding the inner portion of the dial and a white flange which features a 60-second counter in both red and blue. The chronograph seconds hand is done in a deep red lacquer. The dial further features three deep blue azure (concentric circle) subdials. The subdial at six o’clock measures running seconds while the subdial at nine o’clock tracks chronograph hours. The minute counter at three o’clock features three thick curved yellow markings, which are filled with Super-LumiNova. The use of yellow on the minute hand, seconds hand, and hour lume plots, in addition to the minute subdial, is a tribute to the original Montreal, which appeared at a time when the ability to utilize multi-colored luminescent material was just becoming possible.
The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Montreal Limited Edition is powered by the Heuer Calibre Heuer 02 manufacture movement and features a vertical clutch, column wheel as well as 80 hours of power reserve. The dial sits beneath a domed “glass box” sapphire crystal. Each watch displays the unique limited edition number on the sapphire display caseback. The watch comes fitted on a blue alligator leather strap with folding clasp and double safety push-buttons. As part of the 160th anniversary, the watch comes in a special box highlighting its heritage. While not a one-to-one remake in any sense, this watch is more a re-imagination and celebration of a bold design. I mean, if those colors don’t scream “celebrate,” I don’t know what does.
