We’re approaching the height of summer, prime weather for the beach, vacation, and relaxation. It’s never more appropriate than in these hot, sticky months to run for watches that require little effort to wear and tonally match the season we’re in. Travel ready divers in bright colors are the watch language of summer, and Citizen has a solid and affordable contender with these entries in the vaunted Promaster line. These diver GMTs are powered by light, which if all goes according to plan you’ll be getting plenty of in the summer months, and can both track multiple time zones and survive any water sport you throw at them.

This particular sports watch feature set combination isn’t new for Citizen. We looked at a similarly specced watch from the brand (but in titanium) here last year. The cool blue tones of that watch have been replaced with something a bit more vibrant here, with options that range from classic pleasantly disruptive. The most conservative option is likely the traditional and familiar blue and red “Pepsi” version, but we also have a sleek orange and black, and a considerably more youthful and green and blue variant. This latter option, to me, has the most appeal, simply because it’s a little different and somewhat transgressive. It feels like a watch made explicitly for the summer to me, and its niche appeal in that regard is definitely its greatest strength.
It helps that these are well specced sports watches that offer lots of bang for your buck. And there’s not a lot of buck involved at all. The retail price on these is $ 525, and for that you get the aforementioned Eco-Drive movement (a great grab and go option if ever there was one), dual time capability, a shock and magnetism resistant stainless steel case, 200 meters of water resistance, and a sapphire crystal. At 44mm, this is a large watch by almost any standard, but I think that’s part of the charm of the thing. This is not a season for discretion or watches that can be hidden neatly under a shirt cuff. Besides, those cuffed shirts should be put away for the season.
These new Citizen Promaster GMT are available now directly from Citizen and at authorized dealers. Citizen
