Introducing the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT “Sherbet” – Available Now at Windup Watch Shop

How do you create a modern cult watch? Well, ask Zodiac, because that’s what they’ve managed to do with their Super Sea Wolf GMT. A spiritual revival of the Zodiac Aerospace GMT from the ‘60s, the Super Sea Wolf is a jet-set, dressed up version of their highly popular dive watch of the same name, featuring a bi-directional 24-hr bezel and ETA 2893-2 GMT/dual-time automatic movement. Three versions of this modern watch were previously released, each selling out in hours. Today, we’re excited to announce the newest version of the Super Sea Wolf GMT, the Sherbet, featuring a palette perfect for what’s turning out to be a scorcher of a Summer, available now at the Windup Watch Shop.

While Zodiac Watches build off of an archive of iconic vintage watches, what perhaps sets them apart from other heritage brands is their willingness to use those original designs as canvases for new and exotic concepts. Not scared of color, they have come up with some combinations that are unique, surprising, and even at times shocking. Bright greens, faded pinks, white, blue, orange – you name it, they’ve likely used it. Why do I bring this up? Because it’s with this in mind that we take a look at the new bright and bold Super Sea Wolf GMT.

Limited to 282 pieces (they bumped it up this time) the new Super Sea Wolf GMT is the first to feature a white dial. Studded with faceted and polished applied markers, each with an orange accent, it’s an appealing mix of vintage design with crisp, modern color. Blocky lume filled hour and minute hands keep it sporty and legible. The bezel, however, steals the show. Featuring a distinctly vintage layout, the bezel insert is split between safety orange and clean white. The 24-hr index of even numerals and lines is printed in dark blue, giving them a slightly softer feel than black would have had. The GMT hand on the dial is bright orange as well, coordinating with the accent color.

Orange coordination

The result is a striking watch that is one part life preserver, one part popsicle, and a whole lot of fun. It’s also a perfect example of the kind of colorway that only Zodiac would try, let alone pull off. To make matters more interesting, this color was actually chosen by Zodiac fans about a year ago via Instagram stories. Up against two other concepts, the vibrant “sherbet” stood out and got the most votes. Can’t say we’re surprised.

A modern take on a classic concept

Of course, there’s more to this watch than just the dial and bezel. The 40mm case is based on the Super Sea Wolf design, featuring a sapphire crystal, and 200m water resistance. There is one small but significant difference, however, the addition of a polished bevel on the lugs. Starting where the lug meets the mid-case, and widening as it goes down the lug, the bevel is a gorgeous detail that elevates the design. It gives the lugs a thinner, but more aggressive appearance from above, making the watch all the more enjoyable to look at.

The Super Sea Wolf GMT comes mounted to a three-link stainless steel bracelet with a provocative design. Channeling some vintage rivet-bracelet flair, the links have a step taper, and each gets a bit thinner at the edge, creating a faux-rivet look. The outer two links are then brushed, while the center is mirror polished, creating a contrasting line around the wrist. The bracelet comes together with a machined clasp that is built and finished to a degree that belies the watch’s price point.

Coming in at $ 1,695 the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT “Sherbet” is a unique and exciting watch. As a follow up to the previous three models, all of which had dark dials, this model stands out, giving it even more of that special feeling that a truly limited production watch should have. Whether worn on the bracelet it comes on, a Forest or Mai Tai ADPT, the Sherbet is a watch that will make a welcome and truly different addition to your collection. Pre-order now, ships early August
