My Watch Story: Chasing A Birth Year Datejust, Getting Married In An IWC Pilot, A Fist Bump From Buzz Aldrin, And More

Welcome to another installment of “My Watch Story,” a video series starring HODINKEE readers and their most prized watches. The submissions continue to stream in, and we couldn’t be happier to share them with the watch community. Today, we have five new stories submitted by Casey Cabugoy, Ian Nater, Karim Said, Li Wang, and Soren Soltoft Holmboe.

Feeling inspired, or just discovering this project? Please scroll down to the bottom of the page to learn how to submit your own video. But first, we hope you enjoy this installment of My Watch Story.

Casey Cabugoy And His IWC Pilot Chronograph ‘Le Petit Prince’

Casey lives in Singapore and bought the IWC Pilot Chronograph “Le Petit Prince” for his lakeside wedding in New Zealand. He appreciates its elegance and legibility – but, most importantly, every time he looks at the watch now, he is reminded of his wife and that happy occasion. He says that if a watch carries great memories, brings you joy, and inspires you – those are the most important things.

Ian Nater And His Rolex Oyster Perpetual

Ian has pretty much always wanted a Rolex, but it was in 2016, during a road trip through Europe, that he decided to pull the trigger on a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. While in Italy, he started calling around – and finally ended up finding it in Basel, Switzerland. When he got back to the States, he had it engraved to commemorate the trip and signify it as the first watch in his collection.

Karim Said And His Omega Speedmaster

Karim, a longtime NASA enthusiast, coveted the Omega Speedmaster Professional throughout graduate school; years later, when he had the means (as well as a job at NASA), he was finally able to acquire it. At NASA, he’s had several watch-related encounters, including an elevator ride with Buzz Aldrin, complete with a shared-Speedmaster-appreciation fist bump.

Li Wang And His Panerai Luminor

Li, who lives in Jersey City, NJ, knew he had to have this Panerai Luminor when he saw it on someone else’s wrist. He started doing his research, found it at a dealer in New York City, and was able to acquire it when another buyer backed out. He loves it because of its unique shape and simplicity – and says he gets a lot of compliments on it.

Soren Soltoft Holmboe And His Rolex Datejust

Soren, who is from Denmark, wanted a full-set Datejust ref. 1601 from his birth year, and searched for years before finding this one last year in Germany. He loves its classic looks, Jubilee bracelet, fluted bezel, and gray dial – but most importantly, he just loves how it makes him feel when he puts it on his wrist.

Ready To Submit Your Own Watch Story? Here’s How It Works

1. Pick one watch that is very special to you, and get your camera phone ready.

2. Record a video telling us your most interesting or meaningful story about your watch. Let’s say 2-3 minutes is the sweet spot – if you go longer, that’s okay. (And please remember to introduce yourself: your name and where you are from.)

3. Get creative, keep it clean, and have fun!

4. Take some photos on the wrist and a few shots of the watch so that we can proudly display them on our site. Horizontal, please.

5. To share your video and photos, you can either A) upload here; or B) upload to your preferred large file transfer service and send a link to
