As 2020 comes to a close, it feels really weird to say that this year has been “good” in any meaningful way. However, we decided to find the bright spots and to celebrate them rather than dwell on the more hand-wringing aspects of the last 12 months. With that in mind, we’ve got an awesome pair of segments for you this week that unpack exactly what 2020 means for the watch world, both short term and long term.
First up, I sit down with Danny and James to pick our favorite watches of 2020. But rather than go with the usual categories like “best complication” and “best dress watch,” we’ve decided to break 2020 down month by month, selecting our favorite drops from each. Considering there was a period of time in March and early April when we genuinely didn’t know if we’d get any new watches at all this year, the final crop is pretty outstanding. From carbon divers to classic chronographs to ceramic skeletons, this year really did have it all. At the end, each of us crowns our top pick for watch of the year, so you’ll definitely want to stick around for that too.
After that, we zoom out a little bit as I sit down with Cole, Jack, and Jon to get a macro look at what the lasting effects of 2020 will be on the watch world. Specifically, we talk about the evolving trade show landscape and what it can tell us about broader trends in the industry. Will HourUniverse (formerly Baselworld) happen in Basel? What does a digital Watches & Wonders look like with a year of planning? Will Rolex and Patek show their new watches anywhere? With 2021’s schedule still in flux and a mix of digital and in-person events currently on the calendar, only one thing is for sure: The new normal isn’t going to look anything like the old normal.
Finally, I want to personally wish every one of you reading this a happy new year – I can’t wait to show you what we’ve got in store for you on HODINKEE Radio in 2021. It’s going to be incredible.
We hope you enjoy Episode 118 of HODINKEE Radio. We’re going to be taking off the first week in January, so this extra-long episode will have to hold you over until then. Be sure to check out the show notes, and let us know what you think in the comments below.
