Following a successful string of past ocean conservation-themed limited editions (including last year’s Carysfort Reef Limited Edition), Oris has just announced its latest: The Aquis Whale Shark Edition. Based around a 43.5mm Aquis GMT, the Whale Shark Edition sports a gorgeous gradient shark-skin-effect dial matched by a two-color ceramic 24-hour GMT bezel. Limited to some 2016 pieces, the Whale Shark Edition is made in direct support of specific whale shark conservation efforts.
The Whale Shark Edition was created to mark the relationship between Oris and Gerardo del Villar, a photographer, conservationist, and now Oris ambassador. Villar has been working with whale sharks for more than 15 years, and the Whale Shark Edition will help support his research and a series of short films about whale sharks that he’s producing with the brand (the first of which you can see here).
While the watch overall doesn’t exactly break the mold, it is a rather striking dial design, no? The Aquis has long had gradient dials, but the sharkskin texture seen on the Whale Shark Edition is entirely something else. The combination of the subtle patterning with a truly uncommon shade of deep blue-green and the bright orange accents makes for a distinctive spin on a special Aquis.
Powering the GMT-equipped Whale Shark is the Oris caliber 798, which is based on the Sellita 330-1. Automatically wound and offering 42 hours of power reserve and a rate of 4 Hz, the 798 features an independently adjustable 24-hour hand that can be used in conjunction with the 24-hour scale and complementary bezel to track additional time zones. The caseback is steel, the crystal is sapphire, the water resistance is 300 meters, and the Whale Shark Edition comes only on a full steel bracelet.
Oris is producing some 2016 numbered examples, a reference to a 2016 announcement from the International Union for Conservation of Nature stating that the global whale shark population had been cut in half over the past 75 years, due to the effects of human action upon the animal’s environment.
Basically, it’s a cool watch made to help save a very big fish – what’s not to like?
