With the onset of spring comes an increased pace for new watch announcements — not to mention warmer weather that has us daydreaming about days in the ocean. Right on cue, last week Sinn announced its latest limited-edition diver, the U1 DS. Limited to 500 units based on a full-sized U1 and crafted from hardened submarine steel, the U1 DS sports a special dial created via a grinding process that gives each example a unique finish.
Regardless of spec, the Sinn U1 is one of the toughest and most focused dive watches on the market today. One of the German brand’s most well-known designs, the U1 is 44mm wide and 14.7mm thick with a case, bezel, and bracelet made of tegiment-hardened steel (literally the same stuff used for German submarines). Water-resistance is a whopping 1,000 meters. The Sinn U1 DS comes fitted with a flat sapphire crystal, a screw-down crown at four, a unidirectional dive bezel with a luminous pip at 12, and plenty of lume on the characteristically stoic high-contrast dial.
Being a Sinn – and a U-series dive watch – the U1 DS is also low-pressure resistant, waterproof to the specifications of DIN 8310, and designed in accordance to the diving standards of DIN 8306 and tested to Euro diving standards EN 250 / EN 14143. Finally, all of this deep-diving ability is certified by DNV GL, a Norweigan registrar and classification society that validates such compliance.
With a date display at three, the Sinn U1 DS uses a Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1, which ticks at 4 Hz and offers a power reserve of around 38 hours. Given the price point and the intent of a watch like the Sinn U1, the Sellita is a solid choice that should operate reliably and require relatively minimal maintenance across the life of the watch.
Really though, the U1 DS is just a limited and eye-catching take on the otherwise very calm and collected U1. Limited to 500 pieces at $ 2,750 for the rubber and $ 2,850 on the steel bracelet, with its interesting and uncommon dial finish, the Sinn U1 DS adds a bit of collectible fun and flair to the brand’s rough-n-tumble tool diver.
